Couples are stressed now more than ever. This global pandemic has brought challenges to all of our lives in ways few things have in modern history. We are stressed about our health, our future, finances, jobs, family members, our kid’s education, childcare and so much more.

We All Feel the Impact

Modern couples have enough to worry about during the best of times. When you add in all the factors associated with life during COVID, many couples are pushed to the breaking point. We can all expect our relationship to be stressed to the point of bending, but we must make sure we don’t break.

Cracks Become Canyons

I am seeing couples that have had really good relationships previously struggling mightily to make it through the day. The impact of the added stress has the tendency to turn small cracks in the foundation of our relationship into canyons. What was once dealt with and repaired easily can now trigger major hurt, resentment, and disconnection.

What Are We Waiting For?

Some of the couples I have seen reported wanting to just “wait until things get back to normal.” These couples figured that they could wait out the pandemic and without the added stress, they expected their relationships would just snap back into place.

The reality of the situation is that COVID could be around for a long time. Some scientists estimate that life might not go back to “normal” for 2-3 years! While this scenario seems scary, it also lets us know we have to act now and make changes. We can’t simply wait until the virus has left to work on improving our relationships.

It’s Never Been Easier to Get Help

Couples counseling has not been put on hold during the pandemic. I believe that helping couples stay together is essential work. If you need help now, make sure you get it. You can get help in person (if you’d like to get out) or from the comfort and safety of your home. Online couples counseling has proven to be a lifesaver for many couples during these difficult times.
