Women, are you feeling stressed out and pulled in a million directions?
Do you feel pressure to be an engaged partner, a great mom, a dependable employee, and a loyal friend? Are all these demands on your time and energy adding up but nothing ever gets subtracted? You know you can’t keep up this pace forever and feel like something has to give!
The Stressors Women Face
Today’s world places more pressure on women than ever before. Societal pressures lead you to think you should work like you don’t have kids and parent like you don’t have work. It’s an impossible standard to uphold and yet you strive day after day to make it happen.
Women are often thinking of everyone else ‘s needs being met and put their own needs to the side. Women’s mental health is extremely important as many women are the backbones of their families.
Many women serve as the default parent taking on the majority of caring for the kids even though they have jobs of their own. Women also struggle with the mounting emotional labor of keeping everyone’s schedules straight, the household running, and making sure everyone else’s needs are met. This experience is all too common in modern life and many women feel the strain that comes with this heavy load.
Isolation is another area that women in Oregon, especially mothers to young children, face on their own. Many women feel unsupported by their partners and have no one to turn help take on the burden of their roles. Women often believe they should be able to keep up with these lofty demands and end up suffering in silence or build resentment towards their partner. Individual therapy for women addresses these concerns and can leave you with new mindsets and tools to take on life’s challenges.
If you are ready to lower stress levels, find balance in life, and feel better about yourself our therapy for women’s issues may be a perfect fit. We are now accepting new clients! Women across Oregon can access help as we have in-person appointments as well as online therapy options. You can reach Douglas Counseling at (503) 388-6611 to make an appointment or schedule a free phone consultation online here.
Client Testimonial
Jessica T. from Portland, Oregon (a busy working mom with 2 young kids) had this to say about her experience with women’s counseling:
“I was pretty run down when I first reached out for help.” “Between my busy office workload and managing our two small kids I was feeling pretty lost.” “It was so nice to work with a female therapist because it felt like she really understood what I was going through.” “Learning about new ways to approach my life and responsibilities was really freeing.” “I’m happy I attended therapy and have urged two of my friends to get started with counseling.”
The Woman’s Experience
We often hear women comment that no matter how hard they try it feels like they are failing in many areas. Women can’t focus on their work because of responsibilities with their kids. They can’t focus on their kids because of responsibilities with work. It seems like a no-win proposition.
More than ever women are expected to show up and excel in so many areas of life, but they are left without the help and support they need.

About Brooke Stafford, LMFT – Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
As a therapist, my specialty and passion is working with individuals, families, and couples. I am also passionate about empowering others to be advocates for themselves focusing on their awareness and self-responsibility throughout the therapeutic process.
My therapeutic style is specifically influenced by Structural-Strategic Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Solution-Focused Therapy.
Women often have challenges that affect our mood, self-esteem, and relationships. These challenges most often stem from past events, create present experiences, and affect future outcomes. However, the resilience within us along with our resources builds strength. As we strengthen ourselves, we can establish goals to grow and explore life and its many opportunities.
I have practiced in various mental health settings including community health clinics, non-profit and for-profit organizations, and public schools. I hold a bachelor’s degree in human development and child welfare from Portland State University, and I have received a master’s degree in marriage, couple, and family therapy from Lewis and Clark Graduate School of Education and Counseling.
When I am not helping women, couples and families, I am a parent, adoring miniature dachshund owner, and lover of traveling!

Case Studies – Success Stories
Cynthia T. – Cynthia started therapy at a difficult time in her life. She had recently lost her father and was feeling increased pressure to take on the main caretaker role for her elderly mother. Cynthia was also dealing with the pressures of a new role at work and the daily duties of caring for her two teenage daughters.
The therapy started with Cynthia reporting on her past experiences and her therapist quickly saw that she had always played the role of “peacekeeper” and took on more responsibility than her other siblings. Cynthia learned that one of her themes was not setting and keeping clear boundaries with others. She also learned that saying the word ‘no’ was not something she normally did. All of this led Cynthia to take on more and spread herself too thin.
Cynthia worked with her therapist on restructuring the way she thought about her responsibilities. She was able to learn that setting limits didn’t make her uncaring, it actually made her assertive and allowed some time and space to look out for herself. Cynthia made huge strides in her therapy and by the end reported feeling so much less stressed and clear on how to make decisions with family members and co-workers.
Bridget S. – Bridget called our office and reported that she was feeling down on herself and felt like a passenger in her own life. Bridget noted that she hadn’t been able to find a long-term relationship that she so desperately wanted and was starting to wonder “if I am the problem.”
Bridget’s therapist quickly helped her identify that her self-esteem was not in a good place, and actually had always been low. Bridget talked about how she never received acceptance growing up and felt like her critical mother played a large role in her constantly questioning herself. A huge part of Bridget’s work was learning how to empower herself from a shame-based position.
Bridget learned about what healthy self-esteem really is. She learned how to re-think her old ways of judging herself and became much more accepting and approving of herself. The work Bridget did in her therapy will set her up for success no matter what problems she faces in the future. With a new and more positive view of herself Bridget is able to approach life from a totally different and healthier place.
Frequently Asked Questions about Individual Therapy for Women
Can I work with a female therapist?
Yes! Douglas Counseling has female therapists that not only have training in helping other women but lived experience as well.
Will we just talk about our problems or look for solutions?
Individual therapy aims to help people better understand their challenges and find new ways to take on old struggles. Your therapist would serve as a guide to help you see new opportunities to change your thinking, make new choices, find real solutions, and grow.
Are there options to attend the appointments in person?
Yes. Douglas Counseling provides the option to meet in person at the Lake Oswego office location in the Lake Grove area.
What if I have a busy schedule, difficulty with childcare, and can’t make it to the office?
No problem. We offer online appointments that don’t require you to commute to the office or find childcare. You can attend the appointments from the comfort of your home.
Does my partner have to attend therapy?
Individual therapy is aimed at the specific challenges a person is facing and does not require the partner to be involved in counseling. Your individual therapy will focus on your experiences and strategies you can use to find change.
Can I use my insurance to cover the cost of individual therapy?
Depending on your insurance benefits you may be able to submit to be reimbursed for a portion of the cost of therapy. If your insurance has the benefit of “out of network coverage for counseling” you could be reimbursed for some of the cost.
