What’s the difference between couples counseling and affair recovery?

Couples counseling often deals with couples seeking to improve the way they relate to each other working on understanding unmet needs, relational patterns, and working on new ways of communication. Affair recovery is geared towards those couples dealing with a betrayal in their relationship and centers much more on understanding what led to the betrayal, how to build trust and safety, and making new agreements in the relationship.

Do you prefer to see clients in-person or online?

Our preference is usually meeting with clients in-person in the office setting. We believe there are many benefits to attending in-person sessions for most clients. Having said that, some clinicians prefer to meet with clients online and this can also be an effective medium for attending counseling sessions.

How often do you meet with your clients?

The frequency of sessions depends on many factors and can vary depending on the current state of the relationship and what the goals of counseling are. We make recommendations for frequency of meeting at the end of the initial appointment.

Will we attend all couples counseling appointments together or will we have individual counseling sessions as part of the couples counseling?

This depends. Often couples will remain together for meetings for the duration of their couples counseling. If we see a benefit in having individual sessions or working with individuals as part of a couple’s session this will be recommended by your therapist.

What should I think about before attending my first counseling session?

Gaining clarity on your goals for attending counseling, understanding what has kept you from moving forward, and thinking about how you may be contributing to the issues are all helpful areas to consider. Your therapist will guide you throughout the first session gaining knowledge about your history, relationship, goals, and level of motivation.

What should I expect out of my first appointment?

Your therapist will be seeking to give you feedback about the potential areas that need work as well as developing a plan for the therapy process. You will want to walk away from the first session with a confident feeling that your therapist understands your situation and feels like a good fit to help you make progress.
